A Social Experiment on 9 April, presented by Word of Warning + Contact

Social Experiment is a free and informal, semi-regular evening gathering at Contact for anyone interested in Live Art and contemporary performance to meet, chat, and try ideas out…

If you’re a Greater Manchester artist — this is your chance to test out a short performance, intervention, or durational work, in front of an informal audience.

If you’re an audience member looking for something a little bit different — this is your chance to take a few risks & meet some artists in our social experiment.

Artists

Daniel Nicholas · Gin Niemtus · Kathy Rivett · Lisa Ford · Orla Collier · special guest Natalie Spanner   Participating artists subject to change.

Programme

April’s Edition, hosted by Peader Kirk, kicks off at 6pm and finishes by 9pm…

Lisa Ford · Four rows back and on the other side of the aisle

Did you notice when they caught your eye, brushed past your elbow, tapped the table, left a coffee cup, raised their voice, held the door?
Write me a postcard when you get there.

A Works Ahead 2026 commission by hÅb + Contact.

Lisa is a theatre-maker and dramaturg, she takes threads, some yours, some hers, some found in streets, in shop doorways, or in libraries. Often the threads are words and images or conversations with people, she weaves these together to create a fabric of collective feeling.

Gin Niemtus · I Don’t Think This Is Good For Me

Gin is a multidisciplinary artist with a kaleidoscopic practice ranging from installation art to shadow puppetry to music, performance, and theatre. Their art explores the unusual experiences we might be simultaneously haunted and inspired by, and the notion nothing exists in isolation; it all belongs to a chain of events. They aim to make a home for the strange emotions and impulses that we feel as people. Let them cradle your weird with theirs.

Orla Collier · Sometimes I hate going for walks in nice places that look nice

A solo performance piece exploring feelings of pressure and overwhelm.

Life is not a competition with others. In its truest sense it is a rivalry with ourselves. We should each day seek to break the record of our yesterday. We should seek each day to live stronger, better, truer lives; each day to master some weakness of yesterday; each day to repair past follies; each day to surpass… ourselves. And this is but progress.” — William George Jordan

Created & performed by Orla Collier. Music by Lee Affen. Interview conducted & edited by Jack Ballinger. Commissioned & supported by The Knotted Project

Orla (she/her) is a Leeds-based freelance dance artist, physical theatre practitioner, and life model from Cumbria. She trained at Rambert School & NSCD, and has since worked in a variety of interdisciplinary performance projects, including her own solo works. Orla’s practice focuses on using her body to express feelings or experiences that can otherwise be difficult to express or accept.

Natalie Spanner (special guest)

Drag mechanic Natalie Spanner would like to teach you all about holistic car care — how to look after our cars, but also ourselves — and invite you to get down and dirty under the bonnet. This is the introductory car car class — if you want to do the full course, join her at Lowry on Friday night.

Matt Miller is a Nottingham-based poet, performer, and theatre maker who writes about place, identity, and ways of belonging.

Daniel Nicholas · It Could be Us

What would you do if you won the lottery? What would you spend it on? And what if there were certain conditions? Join award-winning comedian & theatre maker Daniel who alongside yourselves (the audience) has just won the lottery. But there’s a catch, it has to be spent within the hour or we don’t get anything at all! (Inspired by & definitely not ripping off Brewsters Millions.) Through a series of interactive games & conversations, we’ll explore wealth inequality, generational divide, and holidays, as we imagine a better world for ourselves. In this excerpt of new ideas, we’ll be looking at trying to find someone the perfect house.

Daniel is a Manchester-based theatre maker & comedian. Previous work includes Eugene‚ a show about AI & billionaires that uses captioning software the Difference Engine for audiences to receive scripted messages from the AI character throughout the show, that toured nationally in 2023. He co-produces Cultural Comedy Tours, where comedians give tours of cultural & heritage sites; as a comedian he’s been shortlisted for the BBC New Comedy Award, won best improv show in Leicester Comedy Festival, and performed at a variety of festivals…

Kathy Rivett · Train Of Thought

Kathy is a comedian that can’t drive. She’s constantly on trains, and found herself wondering “what if I became the train?…” She uses character comedy to explore the different personas she thinks different train companies would have.

Originally created as part of Lowry Artist Development.

Kathy ‘an explosion of mad energy’ (Chortle) is one of the most exciting young comedians on the comedy circuit. She uses absurdism, characters, and silliness to explore ‘endlessly creative’ (blizzard comedy) ideas on stage — it’s the wrong time of the month!
